What is functional movement training?
To me, functional movement means choosing a movement and setting an intention that is relevant to your lifestyle and your goals. In order to do a good job choosing the "right" movement, we as practitioners have to be able to listen, observe, and be able to explain why we choose the movements we choose. Cueing is a great example of what sets a regular trainer apart from a functional trainer. For example, if I'm teaching somehow how to properly squat, I will always give them some context as to when and how they might squat throughout the day.
To be clear: yes, I'm talking about getting up and down off the toilet.
As a functional movement practitioner, I observe fundamental movement patterns (i.e. reaching, rolling, crawling, squatting, walking, running, climbing, etc.) because they reveal our movement narratives. Once I have a good understanding of how someone moves their body through space, I can show them how certain repetitive movements can place too much pressure on a joint or other structure, causing them discomfort or pain. Then, with corrective exercise, and some treatment to the soft tissue in the area, we can work together to bring the body back into alignment so it can heal itself.
Functional training builds confidence as well as grace, strength, and coordination.

Functional training is about bringing awareness and intention to how you move your body through space.
Functional training can look like a lot of different things, but the majority of my sessions are done with minimal equipment.
I like to use bands and kettlebells and sometimes heavier things like sandbags and sleds, but often I'm outside and
I make nature (and other people) part of my workout!
