How is a "Work In" massage different from a regular massage?
The biggest difference between a massage that you might receive in a spa setting, or typically a "Swedish Massage" and the type of massage or body work that I practice is that throughout the treatment you are an active participant. I would argue that most treatments are in fact more effective when you are actively participating (i.e. meditating during acupuncture, or giving feedback to your massage therapist as you are receiving treatment), and I will ask you once in a while to move your body with intention as I work on the soft tissue. A common form of this type of massage is called Active Release Therapy, or myofascial release with movement...structural integration or Rolfing also includes movement with the hands-on element. When it comes to restoring function, reducing stagnant tissue or energy, and establishing new patterns in the body and brain,
it's simply more effective if we work together.
